Can a protein protect us from being overweight?

Many people have weight problems, are overweight or even obese. Will weight problems soon be a thing of the past if we increase the metabolism and the removal of excess fat by a protein? According to a recent study, this seems to be possible.

The current study by the University of Cincinnati found that the production of a human protein could increase the metabolism of excess amounts of triglycerides. The results of the investigation were published in the English-language journal "Journal of Lipid Research".

What are triglycerides?

So-called triglycerides are fats that are found in fast food and frozen pizzas, for example. Regular consumption of such foods increases the risk of becoming overweight or obese.

What is APOA 5?

In their current study, the researchers found a way in the laboratory to produce a human protein (apolipoprotein A5 - APOA 5 for short) that is normally produced in the liver. This protein plays an important role in the metabolism and the removal of excess amounts of triglycerides from the bloodstream.

Triglycerides can cause illnesses and weight problems

"We're really interested in understanding triglycerides because hypertriglyceridemia - too much fat in the blood - is a big factor that leads to cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and other health problems," said study author Professor Sean Davidson of UC College of Medicine in a press release.

APOA 5 is involved in the removal of triglycerides

If there is a lot of fat in the circulatory system, it is particularly important that a lot of it is removed as soon as possible. APOA 5 is heavily involved in how quickly triglycerides are removed from the circulation. The more APOA 5 is present, the faster the triglyceride is removed.

How was the protein produced?

The researchers inserted a human gene, which is encoded by DNA, into bacteria. These have been genetically modified so that they produce human proteins. Once these proteins were made, they were removed from the host and purified for use in bench-top studies and in mouse models.

Larger amounts of the protein could be produced quickly

"We can use bacterial production to quickly produce a much larger amount of this protein than if we tried to isolate it from human blood," said study author Mark Castleberry of the University of Cincinnati.

Protein was able to quickly remove triglycerides from the blood

The mice in the study were fed large amounts of fat and triglycerides. Animal blood was analyzed after feeding and the degree of fat change observed while the mice digested their meals. When the mice ate such a fatty meal and were given the protein, the triglycerides accumulated in the blood were quickly eliminated.

Further research could lead to new drugs

So far, little is known about the structure of the protein and its manner and how it removes triglycerides from the circulation. If it is found out how exactly the protein works, drugs could be developed that use the same mechanism. In the future, we could help people with weight problems and better combat obesity and obesity.
