Women at risk from excess belly fat?

Obesity generally brings with it a variety of health risks. Excess belly fat in particular can lead to serious health problems in postmenopausal women, warns Dr. Ekta Kapoor of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health in a recent release. Women of normal weight should also pay attention to their waist size.

According to the expert, most women build up fat deposits with increasing age, especially in the abdominal area. However, belly fat can lead to serious health risks. Dr. Kapoor explains that even women with a normal body mass index (BMI) can have a level of belly fat that is dangerous to their health. Here, the waist circumference or waist-hip ratio is a good indicator for assessing the health risk.

Health consequences of belly fat

Excess belly fat is, according to Dr. Kapoor has been linked to high blood pressure, diabetes and, ultimately, fatal heart disease. "We also know that it increases the risk of certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer and colon cancer - so, yes, it's very risky," said Dr. Kapoor.

How can belly fat be measured?

According to the expert, however, the BMI remains insufficiently suitable for estimating the risk. Rather, the fat distribution or belly fat is crucial. A measurement of the belly fat can be done relatively easily based on the waist circumference or the waist-hip ratio, explains Dr. Kapoor.

Reduce calorie intake, build muscle mass

In order to reduce excess fat and prevent it from returning, the expert advises to reduce calorie intake and build muscle mass, since this decreases with age anyway. "If we have less muscle, we simply burn fewer calories," said Dr. Kapoor. "And what happens when we burn fewer calories? We are increasing. ”Strength training exercises to build and maintain the muscles are only one aspect. Likewise, it remains important to eat a heart-healthy diet. (fp)
